In Class Listening - Led Zeppelin (I and II)

Hey Readers,

This week in class we listened to Led Zeppelin I and Led Zeppelin II.  Originally The Yardbirds, they became the New Yardbirds in 1968.  They then changed it again to Led Zeppelin in 1968.  I don't really have to talk much about them.  Their music is incredible and incredibly famous.  Here are my favorite Zepplin songs.

Stairway To Heaven

Whole Lotta Love

Black Dog

Babe I'm Gonna Leave You

When The Levee Breaks

Well that's Led Zeppelin.  They're very good musically, but not the best songwriters when it comes to lyrics.  But it's alright, they're still Led Zeppelin.  Well anyways, thanks for reading The Jack Barton Blog and have a nice day!

What I'm Listening To - Dan Henig

Hey Readers,

This week I have been listening to a fellow named Dan Henig.  He appears in a video from one of my favorite "Youtubers" Pat Stansik.  After I heard him sing, I fell in love with his voice.  This week is a little different because I usually post rap music.  But what Dan Henig does is sometimes sing rap songs but in the style of a singer/songwriter.  He has gained some fame with his new video of his accoustic cover of the song "Get Low" which has 1.7 million views as of now.  It's quite humorous and very interesting.  Let's take a look shall we?

Get Low (Cover)

Thrift Shop (Cover)

Tall Blonde Girl with Pat Stansik

Feeling Good A Capella

As Long As You Love Me/I Can't Make You Love Me

Diamonds Cover

So that's Dan Henig.  His music kind of speaks for himself.  I'm not posting his more serious stuff but it's very good.  He is very talented and probably going to become super popular very soon.  So hipster it out when he becomes popular.  As usual, links are below.  Thanks for reading The Jack Barton Blog and have a nice day!

In Class Listening - Abbey Road

Hey Readers,

This week in class we listened to Abbey Road by The Beatles.  It's probably my favorite Beatles album.  I grew up listening to Abbey Road.  Here are my favorite songs off the album.

Oh! Darling

Octopus's Garden

Something

You Never Give Me Your Money

I Want You (She's So Bad)

Come Together

Maxwell's Silver Hammer

What I'm Listening To - Mike Stud

Hey Readers,

This week I have been listening to a lot of Mike Stud.  Mike Stud is an incredibly talented rapper from Rhode Island.  Musicians today aren't always very smart or talented.  Of course, there are several exceptions, such as Mike Stud  He received a full athletic scholarship to Duke University for baseball and then attended Georgetown University for grad school.  During one of his years at Duke, he became injured and couldn't play baseball.  Instead, he turned his injury into an advantage.  He started rapping and look where it's gone.  Here are some of my favorite Mike Stud songs.

College Humor

In This Life

Glad you Came

Captain Hook

Tipsy

Lucky Rogers

Back Again

Youth

Bottle It Up

One More Night

Boyfriend

My Homie's Still

Still Fly

So Good

I really dig Mike Stud and I hope he gets more popular.  If he ever comes to Austin, you will know where to find me!  Thanks for reading The Jack Barton Blog and have a nice day!

In Class Listening - The Band

Hey Readers,

Of all the bands we have listened to so far in History of Rock, two bands have stood out for me.  Frank Zappa and The Band.  I already posted about Frank Zappa, so here is The Band.  Most members are from Canada, except for the drummer who hails from the lovely state of Arkansas.

The Weight

Up On Cripple Creak

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

Don't Do It

Ophelia

I Shall Be Released

Sadly, many members of The Band have passed away.  They may be gone, but their music keeps on truckin'.  Thank you Mr. A for showing me this group, I think they are very talented.  Thanks for reading The Jack Barton Blog and have a nice day!

What I'm Listening To - Chiddy Bang

Hey Readers,

This week I would like to bring it back to a group that was sort of popular just a little bit ago; Chiddy Bang.  You might remember them.  Chiddy Bang is made up of Chidera "Chiddy" (the rapper) and Xaphoon Jones (the dj).  They met while at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  They first became popular for their song "Opposite Of Adults", which samples the famous MGMT song "Kids".  They have released multiple EPs and mixtapes, but released their first album, Breakfast, just last year.  Here are a few of their songs.

Opposite Of Adults

Mind Your Manners

Ray Charles

Truth

Dream Chasin'

Too Fake feat. Chiddy Bang

Chiddy Bang is a very talented duo who I can't believe aren't more popular.  If I haven't talked them up enough, check them out with the links below.  Thanks for reading The Jack Barton Blog and have a nice day!

We Found Love

One Night

Call Me Maybe

Wayward Son

Under The Sea

Turn It Up

So Good

Glad You Came

Alcohol

Stand By Me

They were even featured in the Cotton Bowl on Fox:

In Class Listening - The Beatles (The White Album)

Hey Readers,

This week, we listened to The White Album by The Beatles.  This album is incredibly long.  It isn't even just one cd, it's two.  There is an incredible amount of good songs on this album.  It even features the only song written by Ringo Star; entitled Don't Pass Me By.  I can only do so much through text to describe this album.  Take a listen!

Back In The USSR

 Blackbird

Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da

While My Guitar Gently Weeps

I Will

The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill

Rocky Raccoon (adorable video)

Dear Prudence

Not much more can be said about The Beatles.  They are one of the greatest bands of all time and will continue to be.  Well, thanks for reading The Jack Barton Blog and have a nice day!

What I'm Listening To - Darius Rucker

Hey Readers,

This week I have been listening to Darius Rucker.  He gained popularity as the lead singer of Hootie and the Blowfish, which was founded in Columbus, South Carolina at the University of South Carolina.  As a solo artist, he has ventured into the genre of country music.  He is famous for breaking race barriers in the country music genre, and is a fantastic musician.

Alright

This

Don't Think I Don't Think About It

Come Back Song

I Got Nothin'

History In The Making

True Believers

And something I thought was awesome:

Wagon Wheel (with Old Crow Medicine Show)

Even if you don't like country music, just give Darius Rucker a listen.  I think you will be impressed.  Well, thank you for reading the Jack Barton Blog and have a nice day!

In Class Listening - Jimi Hendrix

Hey readers,

This week in class we listened to Jimi Hendrix.  Born in Seattle, he formed the Jimi Hendrix Experience and is famous for many reasons, including his performance at Woodstock.  Hendrix was probably one of the best guitarists of all time.  And for a guy who never had any experience with singing, he sounds pretty darn good. I think I've said enough, I will just have to let his music speak for me.

Voodoo Child

All Along The Watchtower

Hey Joe

Foxy Lady

Fire

Little Wing

They say that the good die young.  Jimi Hendrix is no exception to this rule.  Sadly, he died in 1970, only a year after Woodstock, at the age of 27.  However, he continues to inspire musicians even today.  I hope you enjoyed today's blog post, as always, thank you for reading The Jack Barton Blog and have a nice day!

What I'm Listening To - Josh Abbott Band

Hey readers,

This week I wanted to switch it up a little bit.  It might be shocking but I do listen to other genres.  Such as country.  I think country is similar to rap, but from a different perspective.  They both talk about the same things;  women, their upbringing, making it big, drinking, etc...  Anyway, The Josh Abbott Band was founded in Lubbock, Texas by a group of Phi Delts at Texas Tech University in 2006.  So much of country nowadays is overproduced and made to sell.  This isn't true of the Josh Abbott Band.  They make music because they care, and even recently released a song entitled "Victory Bells" about Texas Tech, and half of the money spent goes to scholarships for the university.  I thought this was really cool.  Here are the links to some of my favorite Josh Abbott Band songs.

Touch

She's Like Texas

Oh, Tonight

Victory Bells

Road Trippin

I'll Sing About Mine

My Texas (feat. Pat Green)

Idalou

So that's The Josh Abbott Band for you.  I know it's a little bit different from what I have been putting up, but I like them.  Well, thanks for reading The Jack Barton Blog and have a nice day!

In Class Listening - The Beatles (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band)

Hey Readers,

This week in class, we listened to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.  This album was voted the greatest album of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.  In my opinion it is definitely one of the best.  I really love the song With A Little Help From My Friends.  I think it is a revolutionary album.  Check it out:

With A Little Help From My Friends
One of my favorite Beatles tunes.

Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
(LSD...)

A Day In The Life

Full Album For Your Listening Pleasure

This album may have been voted number one, but I don't think it's THAT great.  Of course, it does have With A Little Help From My Friends on it, but compared to all other Beatles albums, it's revolutionary, but not better or worse.  The Beatles were WAY too talented.  It's not fair to other bands trying to compete.  Well those are my thoughts.  Thanks for reading The Jack Barton Blog and have a nice day!

What I'm Listening To - De La Soul

Hey Readers,

When someone brings up late 80's and 90's rap, a couple of groups should come to mind; Wu Tang Clan, NWA, ATCQ,  Nas, Biggie Smalls, Arrested Development, Blackstar, Jurassic 5, the list goes on and on.  But one group should be at the top of the list.  De La Soul.  These men are incredibly talented.  They have so much soul.  Don't believe me?  Listen for yourself:

Me, Myself, And I

Saturday

Stakes Is High

The Magic Number

Buddy

Ring Ring Ring

Eye Know

Breakadawn

Say No Go

Baby Phat

SURPRISE ENTRY:

Feel Good Inc. by The Gorillaz
De La Soul were actually featured on this track and actually won a Grammy for it.

I love De La Soul and I think I will continue to make sure you guys know about these great 90's rap groups.  Lil Wayne has ruined modern rap.  Sometimes you just have to go back to the classics!  Thanks for reading The Jack Barton Blog and have a nice day!
